Sprawl:Culture
Pen, pencil acrylic on a map of France

2007

In a 2005 drawing I made entitled Waterworks: France, I made France disappear underwater by flooding the land mass between the English Channel and the Mediterranean. At the time people naturally thought it was a negative comment about France’s lack of support for the Iraq war. It was not—I did not support the Iraq war. It was a purely visual decision that was hard to defend. So, I created this drawing in which French “Culture” (read yeast) is taking over the world.
