Compass Rose: OLD ILLINOIS, DETAIL
Pencil, acrylic on a road map of Illinois
39 1/4 x 23 1/2 inches
My Southern Illinois town is located in the craggy hills of the Shawnee National Forest and is 6 ½ hours from Chicago. The terrain is completely different from that urban area and from Illinois central plains. Our area has a wild, somewhat bloody history and has often threatened to secede from the rest of the state. Back in the 1800s, Cairo was a much bigger town than Chicago. This map subtly shows these divisions.
