Sprawl: CULTURE
2007
Pencil, pen, acrylic on a well-used tourist map of France
22 x 32 inches
$2000
Note: In 2005 I made a drawing entitled Waterworks: France in which France disappears under an open sea painted between the English Channel and the Mediterranean. People thought it was a negative comment about France’s lack of support for the Iraq war. It was not—I did not support either Iraq war. It was a purely visual decision, but hard to defend. In response I created this drawing in which French “Culture” (read yeast) takes over the world. Vive la France!
